Understanding RTP

The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) was created on a bipartisan basis in 1991 to provide funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized trails uses. Funds for the RTP come from federal gas taxes generated by the purchase of fuel for off-highway vehicle recreation -- by snowmobiles, ATVs, off-highway motorcycles and off-highway light trucks.

The language for funding RTP is currently located in the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) in the current Highway Bill. It remains in the TAP language in the legislation that passed the Senate in July, 2015.

Throughout its history, the RTP has proven to be very successful in helping to fulfill the needs of recreationists of all types. The program currently funds recreational trails across the country at a level of $85 million annually. Losing this program would be a big loss to both motorized and non-motorized trails users.

In addition, RTP-funded projects attract trail users region-wide, and bring added revenue from the tourism to local communities.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that you encourage your senators and congressman know how important RTP is to snowmobiling in your community.
