Case Study #12 During a nighttime ride on a frozen lake, six snowmobilers were traveling together as a group. Even though they were over riding their headlights, the leader and second snowmobile managed to avoid running into a van and a pick up truck that had become stuck on the ice earlier that same day. They saw the vehicles and drove between them just in time to avoid an accident. The next three snowmobilers also managed to avoid the vehicles. The last rider did not see the vehicles in time and could not avoid them. He crashed into the back of the van and even though he was wearing a helmet, he died from head and chest injuries. The investigation showed that the victim had been drinking and was going about 50 miles per hour when he hit the van.
